Encope californica Verrill 1870

Family: Mellitidae

Order: Clypeasteroida

Locality: off Punta Arena, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico, 5 m, Jan. 2005

Dimensions: 115 x 115 x 15 mm

Following the remarks of Heinke Schultz in her bookSea urchins“, page 349, the highest point should
be just anterior
to the anal lunule. The anal lunule should extent a short distance between the distal ends
of the posterior pair of petals.

For Encope borealis the anal lunule should be beyond the distal ends of the posterior petals and the
highest point should be in the center of the flattened plateau.

Although this specimen came to me as E. californica I have some doubt, if it is rather E. borealis.
