Encope micropora L. Agassiz 1841

Family: Mellitidae

Order: Clypeasteroida

Locality: off Punta Arena, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico, 5 m, Jan. 2005

Dimensions: 115 x 115 x 15 mm

Although I got this specimen as Encope californica, I have some doubt. Following the remarks of Heinke Schultz in her bookSea urchins“, page 349, the highest point of Encope californica should
be just anterior
to the anal lunule. The anal lunule should extent a short distance between the distal ends
of the posterior pair of petals.

For Encope borealis A. H. Clark 1946 the anal lunule should be beyond the distal ends of the posterior petals and the
highest point should be in the center of the flattened plateau.

Encope micropora L. Agassiz 1841 has the anal lunule located between the distal ends of the posterior petals , or at leas for the most.

Although this specimen came to me as E. californica it seems to be rather E. micropora L. Agassiz 1841.
